Resilience definition

What is resilience? According to Merriam-Webster dictionary:

re·sil·ience | \ ri-ˈzil-yən(t)s \ (noun)

1: the capability of a strained body to recover its size and shape after deformation caused especially by compressive stress

2: an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change

Basically one whom is resilient has the ability to adjust and recover from unexpected and unplanned external stresses such as a stretched elastic band returning to its original shape or the Virgin Islands recovering from a devastating hurricane season.

In engineering it is important to distinguish resiliency from robustness. Robustness is the ability to react to expected or predictable failures whereas resiliency is recovering from surprises and unforeseen disturbances that usually occur outside of the zone of robustness.
