Dr. Robinson graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of the Virgin Islands in 2011. She earned her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Cornell University where her research focused on the design and fabrication of patient-specific left atrial appendage occluders. She went on to join Professor Jennifer Lewis’s group at Harvard University as a Postdoctoral Fellow to learn new skills in biomaterials and tissue engineering. After completing her post-doc, she joined a technology venture firm where she learned market analysis, go-to-market strategies, product development, and building strong business models. Her expertise is broad, spanning materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, bioengineering, and design. Specifically, she has experience in soft materials (elastomers, hydrogels, etc.), soft robotics, resin development for 3D printing, additive manufacturing, cell culture, and organ-on-chip devices. She is a proud Alumna of UVI and excited to return as an Assistant Professor of Engineering.
Dr. Greg Guannel is a coastal, ocean and civil engineer. Prior to joining UVI, Greg was The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) Director of Urban Program for the state of Florida, where he worked with various stakeholders to implement climate adaptation strategies that promote community building and the use of green infrastructure. He was also a Post-Doctoral Fellow, then Research Associate, with the Natural Capital Project, housed at Stanford University, where he developed a series of decision support tools for resource-poor communities to better understand coastal risk, but also investigate the potential for investment in green infrastructure to reduce risk. Greg started his career as a coastal engineer at Anchor QEA, where he designed structures that reduced exposure to hazardous material. Greg holds a Phd in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University, a Masters degree in Ocean Engineering from Texas A&M University, and a Masters degree in Public Works from the Ecole Superieure des Travaux Publics (Paris).
Robert Stolz received a PhD in Mathematics from Lehigh University, where his work was focused on stochastic processes, integration, and measures in infinite-dimensional vector spaces. His more recent and current mathematics research includes the application of mathematical and computational methods to proteomics, population biology, and the study of coral diseases. Dr. Stolz is director of a number of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) undergraduate projects aimed at increasing the number of students from groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM who earn baccalaureate degrees and ultimately increase the numbers that go on for advanced degrees in STEM. Dr. Robert Stolz is a professor of Mathematics and chair of the Mathematics Department at UVI. He is also an advisor for the B.S. in Applied Mathematics and B.S. in Mathematics programs at UVI as well as the faculty advisor for the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) chapter at UVI.
Dr. David Morris is an astrophysicist and associate professor of physics at UVI. He is also director of UVI's Etelman Observatory. Dr. Morris is the academic lead of UVI's B.S. program in Physics as well as the new Physics concentration in Engineering. Dr. Morris’ personal research is in astrophysics but he also leads several research programs at UVI that have engineering applications and he employs multiple students each year in engineering research internships. Some examples of engineering research projects include development and testing of high-altitude balloon-borne remote sensing devices, upgrading and automation of the Etelman Observatory and its robotic telescope, and installation, testing, and maintenance of a territory-wide network of weather stations known as the Caribbean Drought Monitor. During summers, students can also receive internship placements to work in NASA research centers in the US mainland to work on various astrophysics and engineering programs.
