CGTC celebrates #WORLDWATERDAY

What does water mean to you?

We all use water to drink, wash, clean, cook, swim, grow food, raise animals, and live. Water is essential for life. And this vital resource is in jeopardy. Our freshwater supply is limited, and climate change is predicted to cause a drier Virgin Islands. We will need to become more cognizant of our water use and management.

In celebration of #WorldWaterDay, the Caribbean Green Technology Center (CGTC) at the University of the Virgin Islands will host World Water Month outreach events throughout the month of March to showcase the ways Virgin Islanders can learn more about water quality, safe drinking water, water conservation strategies, wastewater, and the impacts of drought on agriculture.

Got Drought? Drought Mitigation Strategies for Farmers

Drought is a prolonged lack of rain below normal precipitation levels. Although drought comes slowly it can still take us by surprise. The USVI has recently been included in the U.S. Drought Monitor thanks to efforts to install weather stations across the territory as well as digitalize historical records. This means that we are now better able to identify the initial effects of drought giving us sufficient warning time before things become dire.

This webinar talks about drought, its impacts, and what is being done in our community to overcome the negative impacts of this natural hazard.

Safe Drinking Water and Water Quality In Your Community

This means that residents have to either purchase water, leading to increased waste and plastic consumption, or drink unsafe water which can have health impacts. Proper water testing and filtration can solve both of these issues and allow you to feel safe drinking clean water. This webinar discusses the importance of water quality to our health and gives examples of water testing and filtration companies so you can ensure your drinking water is clean and safe.
