Solarize It! UVI Alternative Spring Break program

  • University of the Virgin Islands 2 John Brewers Bay St. Thomas, VI 00802 USA (map)

The Virgin Islands is facing an energy crisis; we are no strangers to frequent and prolonged power outages due to issues in generation and transmission, we are victim to the highest electricity and backup generator fuel costs in the country, and the majority of our power grid uses dirty fossil fuels which contribute to air pollution and climate change. What if there was a solution and you could be a part of it? Renewable energy utilizes abundant and replenishing natural resources that Virgin Islanders love like the sun, sea, and wind, to produce useful energy for homes and businesses. The most common and widely available resource in the Virgin Islands is solar energy captured using solar photovoltaic panels. This spring break program gives you a chance to learn the basics of solar PV and installation. You will learn about exciting topics such as sustainability, energy production and solar energy. You will even get to build your own solar energy system by the end of this learning-packed week. If you are a UVI student who isn’t afraid of working hard in the hot sun, sign up for Solarize It!
